Tucson Visit

We were able to visit Tucson in February for the first time since we left at the end of November.  I cannot even begin to describe how good it was to see everyone! We are thankful that we are still so close so these visits are possible.  Matt and Dana were extremely kind to host us for the weekend.  Thank you friends!! Jeff had Monday off of work so we were able to have plenty of time to catch up with everyone.  We were even able to worship at Rincon on Sunday.  A main reason for the visit over this weekend was to coincide with Ben and Lis and their boys in Tucson as well as to catch Ryan and Yunuen in town. It was amazing to be back together with so many of our good friends all in one place! Jeff says with good friendships, when you get back together you pick up right where you left off.  This was definitely the case!  Only wish we had taken more pictures…

Here is Clara with her newest friend Tiago, Ben and Lis’s youngest.  We were thrilled to meet their youngest two that were born since their move to NM.

Christmas 2012

We were able to spend just over a month back in MS before heading to Phoenix to start my new job. It was great to get such an extended period with family and to let them get to know Clara better. Since we are so behind at posting we are just going to summarize this Christmas in pictures. Hope you like it…

DC Visit

During our month back in MS we decided to take a trip up to Washington DC to visit 2 sets of friends from Tucson who now live up there. It was a great opportunity as I had  never been to DC and we hadn’t seen some of our best friends in quite a while. We somewhat split the trip between the Bigelows and the Grimes.

It was our first time flying with Clara and we were a bit nervous, but luckily we had direct flights both ways and Clara did well. Only a little bit of crying, not too bad overall. We arrived to DC and met Mary at the airport and headed out to Annapolis. We had a great time getting to catch up with Beau and Mary:  getting to see the upgrades to their house, seeing Beau’s massive board game collection and enjoying a karate comic book game for Xbox Kinect (sounds ridiculous but was pretty awesome, Clara even got in the mix). We also got to go downtown for “Midnight Madness” which is an event where the shops stay open late and have free giveaways and deals.  It was freezing, but we had a great time exploring the beautiful downtown Annapolis (Mary was a great tour guide).

On Saturday we all drove into DC to meet with Natalie and Liam. We met on the National Mall and strolled past the Washington Monument to the Smithsonians. There were so many I wanted to attend but we had to narrow it down to just a few. We went to the American History museum first. The transportation exhibit was great, but the best part by far was the display of the Star Spangled Banner, the actual flag about which the song was written.  While not necessarily the most “flag-waving” American out there, the scale of the flag alone was awe inspiring, not to mention all the history wrapped up into it. Clara did extremely well during all of this.  She ate wherever we were, whether it be the cafeteria of the Smithsonian or the burger place we went for lunch. She spent most of the remaining time looking something like this:

After lunch we strolled around DC to a farmer’s market and through some old neighborhoods with some great architecture. It reminded me of how much better the houses are in the east. AZ just has too many cookie cutter neighborhoods. That evening Beau and Mary had to return for a church function so Natalie, Liam, Beth, Clara and I continued our tour of the monuments with the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam war memorials as well as the Lincoln monument. Normally cynical about these type of things, it was somewhat surprising to me how much I enjoyed it. The artistic elements and historical depictions and reflections were a real pleasure.

The next morning we took the Metro down to Alexandria to see where Liam and Natalie live. Old town Alexandria was a charming place with quaint streets lined with shops and restaurants and we were able to visit a small French creperie (where Beth got what she claimed was one of her favorite meals of all time). We also strolled the waterfront which offered a cool view of downtown DC.

We then headed back to their house for dinner which was great. It was fun to see their place and catch up on life as well as for them to get to meet Clara and see her do something other than sleep. Not that I am complaining, but her 8 hour nap pictured above in the streets of Alexandria just isn’t her modus operandi.

Our last day in town was Monday so Beau and Liam had to work. Luckily Mary and Natalie were available to come meet us back in DC and explore the museums a bit more. We had saved the Natural History Museum for last as it was the one I looked forward to most (mostly because of the dinosaur exhibit). I remember as a kid always wanting to get to see the giant T-rex but most of all, my personal favorite, Allosaurus. Beth and I had also promised our nephew Owen (who now has a similar fascination with dinosaurs) that we would take a picture with the T-Rex for him. I also snapped a quick picture of all the girls with the Brontosaurus.

After the museum we headed over to Georgetown to explore and go to a cupcake place that Mary raved about. It was called Georgetown Cupcakes and apparently is the subject of a TV show on TLC. Georgetown was a cool place that reminded me a lot of Barcelona or other European towns with the narrow streets and older architecture. It was a great place to spend our final hours in DC.

Although we were tentative about traveling with Clara, we are extremely glad we went. Time spent with good friends is never regretted and we definitely miss all of them out here in AZ. Maybe someday we can all end up in the same place. If not, we’ll just have to plan to meet up regularly.

While we were gone…

So a lot has been happening in the Rottman household over the last few months.  In no way do I use this as an excuse for my blogging delinquency, however, I’ll do my best to catch you up…

The destruction of my fingers

I dropped a railroad tie on my right hand and almost severed the tips of my index and middle fingers.  I required a fair amount of stitches, but they seem to be healing nicely.  Maybe I’ll put up some more pictures soon for those with strong stomachs.

I’m really going to try to get back in the habit of blogging.  We have plenty happening right now, so there should be a lot to share!

Terrible System, Great People

The wait at San Salvador continued to grow and after about 2 hours of waiting as each person in our group got their boarding passes, we find out that the flight we are taking has been cancelled for some (still unknown) reason.  Due to this event there is now no longer enough room for  our entire group to make it to La Ceiba on Saturday.

TACA airlines has to be still in the 1990’s in terms of computer system, as the information desk was still required to type out each individual boarding pass and the system would take up to 45 mins per person to clear and print the passes.  God is gracious though and has put some very helpful people that truly seemed to care about our comfort.  This is what resulted:

First, 12 members of our group were sent a round-about way through Tegucigalpa, to San Pedro Sula, to La Ceiba and arrived at 7:30pm.  These each received a $200 voucher (transferrable, hopefully we can use these on future trips).  The remaining 5 of us (the Vandegeests, Greg Wates, Beth and me) were all delayed until the 7:15 flight out of San Salvador to Tegucigalpa.  This meant an additional 5 hour wait and that we would not be arriving in La Ceiba that evening.  We were given $300 vouchers, free meals and hotel for the night. They were nice enough to let us wait in the VIP lounge, which afforded us a quiet, peaceful place to get some rest and play some cards.  They also provided us with a few meals.  We arrived to Tegucigalpa last night and they had arrangements made for us for transportation, a hotel, meals and transportation back to the airport.  I was very impressed with the level of customer service.  A representative of TACA actually sought us out as we waited for our luggage (which all arrived) to give us the information.  This was definitely from God, as attempting to find and book a hotel in a foreign country on little notice with little information about the areas would be a nightmare.  After a short meal and a good nights rest we are up gathering our items to run to breakfast before heading back to the airport.  We are scheduled to arrive at 9am to join the rest of our group that I got confirmation arrived safely last night.

Please pray that everyone was able to get some rest and refreshment last night and that God will continue to use us (and test us) in our time here in Honduras.

Airports aren’t all that fun

Our flight to Honduras incorporated a 7 hour delay in LAX as our flight left at 1:40am.  After boarding, there was apparently some sort of electrical generator failure that caused us to deplane.  After getting a new plane and finally reboarding we got out of LA around 4am.  While annoying, it wouldn’t be that big of an issue if we made our connections.  Sadly we arrived in San Salvador about 2.5 hours after our connection left.  We are now rescheduled to get in to La Ceiba at 7:25pm.  Previous total travel time ~ 24hours, new total travel time ~30 hours.  Ugh.

Pray for the team as we are all running on VERY little sleep and still  have quite a trip ahead of us.  At least we’ll make it to La Ceiba today.

San Francisco Day 3

Today was another traveling day with the morning starting with a trip over to Muir Woods after watching an exciting finish to the US women’s Wold Cup game against Brazil (one of the best soccer games I’ve ever watched).  After Muir Woods we made a quick stop by Sonoma for a short wine tasting before heading over to Napa.

Strangely enough, Liam and Natalie, two of our great friends from Tucson, happened to be coming through San Francisco from Lake Tahoe so they met us in Napa.  We ate a quick lunch at a barbeque place.  I’m always a little wary of barbeque outside of the south, but this place was impressive.

We started out wine tastings at a vineyard called Frog’s Leap, a suggestion from Ben Hoffman.  It was exactly what we were expecting in a beautiful Napa Valley Winery.  An amazing house with a wrap-around back porch where we sat and enjoyed some wine.  It was a perfect temperature, mid-70s with a slight breeze.

img_8587

We then headed to another winery, not nearly as grand as Frog’s Leap, but it had a lighter, little more commercial feel.  Most of the wine I wasn’t that impressed with, except for the 12-year Port that we finished with.  It was exquisite:  a much smoother feel than the aroma suggested, with a sweet and crisp finish.  The lady helping us suggested that it would only get better with age and that the biggest change would happen between 10 and 20 years.  Liam and Natalie got a bottle and hopefully we can get back together in 2020 and crack it open.  Imagine how different our lives will be by then.

We finished with a trip to a small, up-and-coming winery called Tember Bey.  We had a complementary tasting which was nice, but the owner was pouring and we were the only one’s in there so we just hung out and discussed how he got into the business.  He then broke out the 2009 lines which they haven’t released yet (he had opened them to test how the wine was developing) and gave us a taste of the newest vintage of the wines we had already tasted.  We ended up buying a bottle of his Cabernet Sauvignon and can’t wait to have a good occasion to break it open.  It was the perfect end to a fun and relaxing day in Napa.  We drove back to San Francisco and had a great (again, late) Thai dinner near AT&T Park.

San Francisco Day 2

Beth and I decided to take it easy and just take a long drive around the bay area.  We headed down to Palo Alto and toured around the Stanford campus.  The campus is gorgeous with some amazing architecture, definitely a cool place to hang out.

We then headed over to Hwy 1 to slowly make our way back to San Francisco.  We stopped by a cool little produce stand and got some really juicy and sweet strawberries. We then got to stop at Half Moon Bay to get some beautiful pictures and get to watch some surfers and enjoy the ocean.

img_8533

img_8544We took the meandering drive back into San Francisco and headed back to Berkeley to meet up with Steven for a late dinner around 8:45, which has by this point become the norm.  We went to a place called Summer Kitchen which provides dishes made with ingredients from local farms.  Beth got a lasagna with various vegetables like squash, zuchhini, eggplant, grape tomatoes.  And since we were the last people of the night, they gave us a free sampler platter of their desserts.  What a way to end the day!

San Francisco Day 1

Beth and I arrived last night in San Francisco to visit Steven and tour around a bit before Beth’s job starts, etc…  We did mostly “touristy” things today:  walking around downtown, a visit to Lombard Street, some great food and a visit to the Golden Gate bridge.

We ate lunch at Calzone’s in North Beach and then made our way to AT&T park to try to catch a Giants game, but it was sold out and the scalpers were way to expensive.

Now to get some rest before heading out again tomorrow.  Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Nataliam Wedding

Beth and I had the awesome opportunity to travel to Erie, PA this past weekend to celebrate Liam and Natalie’s wedding.  It was a lot of fun to get to meet some of Natalie and Liam’s good friends as well as their families.

img_8051

It was a beautiful wedding at an old theater in downtown Erie (Natalie’s hometown).  It was definitely a unique setting, but it came together amazingly and it turned out to be a great setting that really added to the ambiance of the night.

After the wedding, Beth and I decided to make a trip to nearby Niagara Falls.  The falls were crazy.  I have seen a lot of pictures over my life but they just don’t do it justice.  We tried to take some pictures but due to the cold and mist (which was messing with the autofocus on our camera) we didn’t hang around long.

img_8082

We then continued on to Toronto for the evening.  We got there fairly quickly and had most of the afternoon to look around Toronto a bit.  We were able to see the CN Tower, which at one point was the largest tower in the world, and Steamwhistle Brewery, where we tasted their famous pilsner.

img_8098

img_8107

We then traveled over to what was called the Distillery District which is a quaint area with brick streets and brick buildings and a few little shops and restaurants.  We went in order to find a place called Soma.  It is a chocolate maker which is one of the only places in North America where they import raw cacao beans and make their own chocolate from scratch.  Beth and I got two little truffles (mine was filled with caramel and topped with sea salt, all from Madagascar and Beth’s was dark chocolate with Venezuelan oranges) and a cup of their famous hot chocolate.  It was just amazing.  I don’t even know how to begin to describe it.

img_8119

We later went over to Greek town for a gyro dinner before heading back all the way to Pittsburgh the next morning for our flight out.  Overall it was a fun trip and a really nice vacation for Beth and me.  We got back just in time to finish compiling donations for the upcoming rummage sale for our Honduras trip (with the piles of stuff in our house to prove it).
